Assaultcube goes Electronic Sports League

Assault cube, formerly ActionCube, is a free first-person-shooter based on the game Cube. Set in a realistic looking environment, as far as that´s possible with this engine, while gameplay stays fast and arcade. This game is all about team oriented multiplayer fun.”
That’s what their official homepage says, and they are right. And they try now to become “official”.

Here are some screenshots I just took.

The game is constantly developping. It’s at version 0.93 now, with version 1.0 coming soon. I found a very good review of version 0.93 at

I played the game Cube, which is also the name of the engine made by Wouter van Oortmerssen aka Aardappel (dutch for “potato”) years ago. At that time (2004) Cube had some leagues in the Electronic Sports League which is kind of a database for online gaming and a platform for a lot of games all over the world.

Cube was a lot of fun, but I am not really a fps player and mainly had joined the league to do MakkE a favour. MakkE made some maps for Cube, and is one of the project leaders of Rabid Viper Productions, the team that made Assaultcube.

I had a short peak on version 1.0 and can say: it will look much better, and there’ll be some new features (crouching, better menus, easier customization, new maps) I also think it looks a bit better.

To get a permanent league at the ESL they make an AssaultCube CTF Opening Cup on November the 2nd, organised by driAn the other project leader.
He needs 16 teams and till now he only has 12, but we work on it. If you already play AC and have time on November the 2nd 8pm CET, just make a team, it’s easy, and join.
I joined too and you can bet you would win against me.
For those that don’t know what CTF, capture the flag, is, wikipedia knows it all.

It looks like Cube is also being ported to the iPhone/iPod touch app store ( Hopefully the online portion will work!

  2. Wow yes you are right, thanks for telling us. I checked the page of the developer of the Ipod version, it’s
Looks like it’s made by a guy who’s in the Sauerbraten team (Cube2). Sauerbraten needs much more comp ressources than Cube(1). So it’s not really a miracle that he chose to use cube(1) for an iphone game.
